Marysville is a city in Sonoma County, California, located on the banks of the Napa River. The population was 29,977 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sacramento–San Joaquin Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area and is included in the Downtown Sacramento area. The land where Marysville now stands was given to by Rancho San Rafael de Asis on July 4, 1849 as part of a larger parcel encompassing present-day Santa Rosa and Petaluma. Part of that parcel also included what is now Marysville. The name "Mariesville" may be derived from Monterey Bay which can be seen from many areas around town including Cannery Row Road and City Park Drive; it's thought this name may have been bestowed upon the town by Captain James Cook during his visit to Northern California in 1779. According to one account, John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort at present-day Marysville in 1847 while on his way upriver to foundjoing new land grants near Redding. He named his new settlement after his daughter, Maria Sutter (1784-1859). After arriving at Sutter's Fort there were several skirmishes between Native Americans and European settlers over ownership of various parcels within what would become Marysville proper; these disputes eventually led to Treaty 7 being signed on March 15, 1850 between federal soldiers under General George Ayer and Pacheco Indian leaders ending most hostilities between white colonists and native nations for about 25 years until1800 when more serious conflicts began anew involving both groups throughout Northern California until 1851 when Ulysses Grant ordered all Native American hostilities stopped effective February 15th due to concerns over their treatment by United States troops stationed east of Palo Alto/Santa Clara County lines. In 1847 James Queenan opened a ferry service across the Napa River linksening Santa Rosa with Point Reyes Station on Marin County; henceforth known as Queenan's Ferry Landing or Queenan's Ferry Point because it served as a major transportation artery linking Sonoma Counties alongwith Marin County . In 1861 Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Cole billeted officers at an abandoned gold mine southeast of town while he oversaw construction of Fort Ross Army Depot adjacent to main square; Coles property still remains today connected via road running parallel to Main Street west of town center (now University Avenue). In 1847, the town of Marysville was founded by John C. Fremont and his wife, Catharine Beecher Fremont. The town located on the north bank of the Sacramento River between present-day Sacramento and Placer County, California. The first post office in Marysville was established on November 12, 1847. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the river and its lucrative agriculture and fishing opportunities. In 1851, a Methodist Episcopal church was built in Marysville; it is still in use today. In 1850, George Wurtzel opened a wagon shop in Marysville which became an important source of goods for farmers in the area. Wurtzel also operated a leather business from his house on Main Street until his death in 1865. Marysville experienced significant growth during World War II as many companies relocated to the area to take advantage of wartime shortages of materials such as steel and aluminum. In 1945, local lumber company First American Lumber Company merged with Peabody Coal Company to form United States Steel Corporation. The war left a lasting impact on Marysville with many factories closing down and leaving behind job losses for residents throughout the years. The current incarnation of Marysville began developing after World War II when new businesses started moving into the town: restaurants, hotels, truck stop areas etc..
