Over the years, Marysville has been home to many notable people including Rear Admiral John C. Fremont, ranchers and farmers, as well as actress Beverly Garland and her husband Irving Thalberg. In recent decades, Marysville has become known for its wine industry with vineyards located throughout the town. The earliest residents of what is now Marysville were mining prospectors from Nevada Territory. They discovered gold in 1851 while prospecting near present-day Reno and decided to set up camp on the hills east of town. By 1862, there were over 50 men living in the small community which had a population of about 25. By 1865, mining operations had ceased and most of the original settlers had departed for other opportunities in Nevada Territory or Northern California. A group of pioneers from Oregon arrived in 1868 to begin farming at what is now North Lake Tahoe Boulevard.
