Marysville is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 7,876 at the 2010 census. It lies on the south bank of the Kern River, east of Bakersfield and west of Fresno. The town was founded in 1859 by John C. Fremont as an agricultural settlement named for his mother and sister Mary. A post office was established in 1861, and the name was changed to Marysville in 1863 when it became part of what is now Kern County. The first settlers were Jens Jensen and Ole Nielsen from Denmark who arrived in wagon trains from Stockton on November 15, 1859. They organized a company to plow and water the land within what would become Marysville Township. In 1865, gold seekers discovered gold near here and soon there were numerous mining camps set up around Marysville including Goldfield (1866), Crystal City (1868), Sutter's Mill (1870-71), Nevada City (1872) and Monterrey (1873).
