Marysville is a small town in the Central Valley of California, about 145 miles (220 km) east of Sacramento. The population was 2,859 at the 2010 census. It is located on State Route 163, just north of the state line with Nevada. The community was founded in 1853 by parents of two children who were sent to live with their maternal grandparents in Marysville after their father's death. The original name for the community was Auburn, but it changed to Marysville because some local residents objected to having an "A" in front of their name like other nearby communities. The town grew rapidly due to its location and its agricultural economy until World War II when munitions production ceased due to enemy action near San Francisco and other sites across the country. In 1945, Marysville became home to United States Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. After the war ended, many businesses closed or went out of business and there remained only a few farmssteads until development began around 1970 when state Route 163 was widened and built as an express highway bypassing town center and housing developments sprang up along both sides of the road. Today, much remains unchanged from those early days- including a small farmers market that takes place every Saturday morning from 8am – 10am outside of town hall; a variety of stores including hardware, appliances, clothing stores, department stores and more; as well as several churches which serve as cultural hubs for surrounding villages; antique shops; restaurants; bars/pubs; schools - all without sacrificing Main Street's traditional pedestrian shopping district where locals come together each Saturday morning for coffee and pastries before spending time inside one or more businesses before heading back out onto Main Street once again during lunchtime or evening hours
In 1847, Marysville was founded on the San Joaquin River by John and Eliza Earle. The town was named for Mary Ann, the daughter of a local man. By 1860, it had a population of 100 residents. In 1865, the railroad arrived in Marysville and started passenger service. A post office was established in 1870 and the name changed to Marysville in 1881. The town prospered thanks to its location on the river and its manufacturing capabilities. Manufacturing included textiles, shoe leather, glassmaking, papermaking, lumbering and brewing. After World War II there were declines in industry until recent years when mining has resumed and new businesses have arisen including restaurants and retail stores.
