On 3 September 1898, after Mexican forces invaded and occupied Monterey County, California, U.S. Marines joined local militia units in repelling an invasion by Mexican troops from that county; this event is generally considered to be the beginning of the Second Spanish-American War (1898-1902). In 1915 the USMC moved its Headquarters from Monterey to Coronado Naval Air Station following World War I; it had been located at Mare Island Naval Shipyard since 1901. Late in 1941 during World War II marines manned key positions aboard ships offshore off California's coast as part of Coast Guard operations code named Operation Neptune's Spear which aimed to halt Japanese amphibious landings before they could completely take shoreline positions around California's Central Valley
Marysville is a small town located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. Marysville is located about an hour east of Fresno, and about an hour north of San Francisco. Marysville is irrigated by the Kern River, and its economy is based on agriculture. In addition to agriculture, the town also produces hay, alfalfa, grapes, and other agricultural products. The first Europeans to visit what is now Marysville were Spanish soldiers who traveled in 1821-22 looking for routes to Sonoma County. They named the river "Río de las Muertes" after one of their horses that had died while trying to cross it. By 1836, two American families had founded a ranch there called Rancho Rinconada which included land on both sides of the Kern River. In 1844–45 George Hearn built a sawmill on Pahrump Creek near present day Marysville as part of his plan to extend Ulysses S Grant's military road from Tulare County into central California through Morelos Province (now Napa Valley) and into Northern California beyond Sacramento County. This mill became one of America's largest sawmills until it closed in 1960 due to pollution from product runoff from nearby farms and residences. The first post office in Marysville was established in 1871; it was moved from Crescent City several times before settling at its current location in1881-82 when mail service between Fresno and Stockton became available through Union Pacific Railroad's Atascosa branchline running parallel to US Highway 101 south of downtown Fresno then upriver past Cloverdale via US Highway 395 onto Route 66 concurrent with US Highway 101 northeast out of town towards Atascosa where mail continued arriving until 1984 when local postage rates were raised effective 1/1/85 making all packages delivery independent regardless of distance or railroad company service availability). In 1916 Hyrum Smith opened a grocery store which remains open today as Dole Foods Incorporated.. The first school in town was organized by Mrs Ladd Ennis around 1870; it burned down some time later but was rebuilt with new materials within a few months . Mrs Ennis taught school for nine years before moving away for health reasons around 1886-. A second school operated for three years before being closed due to lack enrollment after World War I because so many people left rural areas during that time period for jobs opportunities in larger cities like Los Angeles or San Francisco (). A grammar school operated briefly beginning in 1893 before closing due to financial concerns (). After World War II there was steady growth with more births than deaths until 1957 when there were only 82 residents living here according as well as numerous businesses starting up throughout this decade including four banks (), twenty-six restaurants (), twelve stores () etc.). One reason why this growth ceased may have been because many people found jobs closer home instead of coming back into rural areas during these boom times thanks largely to federal highway construction projects such as Interstate 5 & State Route 99 that bypassed most towns within commuting distance (see also: The Decline And Fall Of Rural Californias: Industrialization Alone Cannot End The Problem)). With the increase competition from urban centers came increased prices for goods and services relative to those inside traditional villages such as Marysville ().
