The history of the navy in Marysville goes back to 1862 when the California Navy Yard was established. The first ship built at the Cal Navy Yard was the USS Sacramento. This ship was a frigate and served in the Mexican-American War. In 1871, Congress passed an act providing for a navyyard in San Francisco, and construction began on that facility. In 1875, Congress appropriated $15,000 to be used for naval purposes in San Diego County, California. The first United States Naval Station in Oakland was established on October 15th of that year. On December 1st of that year, USS Constitution ( observe ) arrived at Fort Point from Portlandport with Rear Admiral John Richardson as Commanding Officer. A detachment of Marines under Commodore James Fenton disembarked from her and collegiate students from USMCA came ashore to help celebrate the occasion. On January 3rd of 1876 Commodore Richardson relieved Rear Admiral James Fenton and he returned aboard Constitution with his staff officers and marines after spending two weeks inspecting ships at sea off Santa Cruz Island. From then until 1898 there were no significant changes taking place within the navy yard or its command structure; however during this time naval activity increased significantly due to hostilities between American countries such as Spain and Mexico over American possessions along their respective coasts including Cuba and Puerto Rico One important event which occurred during these years happened on November 7th 1870 when CSS Independence arrived in town laden with arms supplies destined for Mexico City specifically ordered by President Ulysses S Grant upon his inauguration following his re-election victory over Zachary Taylor On December 8th 1870 USS Constitution departed Oakland laden with munitions but never reached her destinationdue to bad weather en route USS Constitution had been participating actively in operations off shore trying to stop Mexican aggression since she had become available

In 1846, Marysville was founded on the banks of the Sacramento River by James W. Mason and his brother-in-law, George Sutter. The site chosen for the town was based on an ancient Joshua tree grove located about two miles to the east of present day Marysville. The first permanent settler in what is now Marysville was John Church who arrived in 1840 from Illinois. In 1846, James W. Mason purchased a grant from the Mexican government for 2,000 acres (0.8 km2) of land that included part of present day Marysville. Mason's purchase marked the beginning of a period of growth and development in Marysville which would last until after World War II when it declined as a result of farming and other economic activities
In 1847, Marysville was founded by General George C. Smith as a military post on the Mojave Desert. The post was named for his wife, Mary. At the time of its founding, Marysville consisted of a small ranch, two stores and one hundred soldiers. In 1852, the post was moved to what is now known as Fort Irwin and in 1861 it became part of Camp Roberts before finally being renamed Fort Marysville in 1865. In 1870, the fort was enlarged and renamed Fort Mason after Major General John B. Mason who served as Commandant at that point. The fort remained in use until 1911 when it was decommissioned and converted into a National Guard barracks.
