Marysville is a small town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2000 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The first European to visit Marysville was Captain John Maynard Kane in 1825. He named it after his wife's mother,Mary (née Beall). Some early pioneers who arrived in Marysville were George Weiser and his family who started out building a cabin on the corner of Second and Main Streets in 1851. They are also considered the first permanent settlers in what would become Marysville. In 1872, Gold miner James Fenton discovered gold near present-dayold Santa Clara Boulevard and North First Street in what is now Marysville. This led to large scale mining activity that began right away with prospectors coming to find gold around this area. The town got its start when two railroads came through and donated land for a railroad depot which became an important center for transportation during this time period. A post office was established at Marysville on December 12, 1872, by Jens Jensen with the name of "Dover". It served until 1913 when it changed its name to "Merritt". In 1907, voters passed Proposition 10 which called for incorporation of the town as a city under state control with voting rights like other cities then existing within California. Marysville is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 37,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kern County. The first Europeans to visit what is now Kern County were fur traders and missionaries in the 18th century. On July 12, 1844, Mexicanolos Rancho San Jose was granted by Governor Antonio López de Santa Anna to James Waddell and his brother George Waddell as part of Rancho San José Distrito No. 3 on Monterey Peninsula east of Marysville. The grant included an area along the present day route 99 from Marysville to Atascadero that became known as Rancho San Jose del Norte or "Northeast Ranch". In 1850, a second grant was made for 640 acres (2 km²) extending south from rancho San José northeast to watercourse called Benicia Creek near downtown Los Angeles. This land became known as Rancho La Brea after one of its original owners, late rancher Juana la Brea. In 1853–54 two brothers named Charles Goodyear and Alfred Buie built a mill on the Conejo River in what is now Stockton; they operated it until 1865 when it was replaced by an new mill built by Goodyear & Company in nearby Janesville which began operating in 1865. In 1870 Charles Goodyear sold his interest in the mill complex to Ayer Dowling & Company who continued operation until 1909 when their plant burned down leaving behind a large crater on the site which still remains today). In 1901 Samuel Morse established his own telephone company with office space and equipment located at 5100 block of North First Street in downtown Los Angeles; this marked the beginning of phone service within Kern County outside of Needles and Bakersfield which had been served only by horse-drawn wagons up until this point.
