Maywood, California is a small city in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 7,571 at the 2010 census. It is southeast of Stockton and east of Sacramento. The first European settlers arrived in 1849 and named it "Humboldt." Humboldt's people were friendly with the local Native Americans who hunt deer and other animal species near Maywood. The first store opened in 1854 in what is now the downtown area. In 1860, Maywood became an incorporated village under the name of Eureka after its citizens voted to become one from a number of towns that had applied for incorporation. In 1872, Maywood became part of the new state of California when it was created from portions of Sonoma and Nevada counties. It remained an unincorporated community until 1959 when it joined San Joaquin County as a full county. During World War II, many factories were built in or around Maywood including Beech Aircraft (now Boeing), Lockheed Martin Corporation's Skunk Works Division (now Lockheed Martin Space Systems), Pacific Bell Telephone Company's Buena Vista Switchboard Operations Center (later known as KTSA-TV) and Consolidated Radiation Laboratory building on Warner Avenue which housed three plutonium processing plants operated by Los Alamos National Laboratory between 1945 and 1957: Alpha Particle Physics Lab Building (1946–47), Coyote Canyon Plant (1948–50) and Nucleon Processing Facility building(1957). The post office closed down on July 14th 1985 due to budget cuts; however its ZIP code remains 82334 because it was part of San Joaquin County at that time. Maywood is a small town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 581 at the 2010 census. Maywood is northeast of San Francisco and east of Oakland. It has a history dating back to 1852 when Anna Bancroft subdivided land in present-day Maywood for her husband, George Bancroft.
Maywood was founded in 1853 by three brothers, Willard, Brigham and George May. The town was named after a grove of may trees that the May family used to farm. The first store opened in 1854. The population grew rapidly during the 1850s and 1860s, reaching 100 people by 1870. In 1876, the May family sold their land to a group of businessmen led by John Sutter. The new owners built a large mill on the riverbank which they used to produce flour, lumber, cheese and other products. The town became an important manufacturing center during the late 19th century with its own streetcar line and numerous factories. However, heavy industry began to decline in the early 20th century as advances in transportation made it easier for goods to be shipped around the world. By World War II, Maywood had shrunk to just 10 people and two stores. It recovered somewhat during the post-war years but declined again by the end of the decade due largely to economic factors such as rising transportation costs and a falling demand for manufactured goods. In recent decades, efforts have been made to reviveMaywood through various programs such as marketing it as an eco-friendly destination or providing access to local Trailsblitz events. Despite these efforts however, little has actually changed since 2009 when most of what is left of Maywood downtown was destroyed in a fire
