Maywood is a small town in Kern County, California. It is located on the east side of the Kern River, about an hour and a half south of Bakersfield. The population was 1,686 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in Maywood was John C. May who arrived in 1876. He named his land after his family's home place (now known as Maywood Heights). The community grew rapidly due to its location near the railroad and other industries that contributed to its growth. By 1910, Maywood had a school, post office, three churches and over 100 homes. The heyday of Maywood began around 1915 when it became home to the United States Military Academy at West Point (USMA). USMA students would often stay for weekends in Maywood while their courses were being completed. During World War II, many American servicemen stationed in Kern County came through town for work or temporary stays before going off to fight overseas. As war progressed and more people moved into the area, businesses started opening up to support them such as grocery stores, department stores and movie theaters. In 1945, after World War II ended, most of the manufacturing jobs that had been lost in Southwest California transitioned back intoMaywood with new companies like GM and Ford opening up shop there too However by 1970s most families had left for other parts of California or other states altogether because of high tuition rates at local universities . The last resident from Maywood died in 2006 . Today only a few remaining descendants live in town .

Maywood was founded in 1868 by James May and his wife, Anna. The town was named for the may trees that were found in the area. In 1872, Anna May died from a fever and James May married Johanna Setterfield. The couple operated a small grocery store until their death in 1922. They were buried at the Maywood Cemetery. In 1936, the town passed an ordinance forbidding interracial marriage. This prohibition was repealed in 1941. The following year, an ordinance prohibited smoking on public property. This ordinance also expired in 1942. In 1951, an ordinance prohibiting discrimination against homosexuals became effective in California towns within 100 miles of San Francisco Bay Area cities with a population over 25,000 people. This law also expired in 1952 after being challenged by Mayor Dianne Feinstein of San Francisco.
