Maywood grew slowly until it became an incorporated village in 1907. It experienced rapid growth following World War II as a result of the military base that was located there. In 1911, when the Kern River flooded, Maywood residents built an artificial dam to control the water level and prevent flooding into their communities downstream. Today, Maywood is home to two dams—the Lakeview Dam and the Rodeo Dam—and a number of smaller lakes that provide drinking water for the townspeople and other local businesses. The townsite also includes five original mills dating back to 1850: three gristmills and one sawmill.
