Maywood, California is located in the southern portion of San Francisco Bay Area. It is bordered by Contra Costa County to the east and north, Alameda County to the west and south, and San Mateo County to the east and southeast. The population of Maywood was 34,651 as of 2016. The mayor of Maywood is Dennis Herrera. The name "Maywood" comes from a place called "Maiden's Glen" in what is now Contra Costa County. This area was first settled by Native Americans in the late eighteenth century. In 1849, Rancho Cañada de la Frontera was granted to José Gomez y Costilla by Governor Manuel Miranda. By 1870, it had been purchased by James Wickersham who named it Maywood after his infant son Maynard Wickersham. Wickersham sold Rancho Cañada de la Frontera to Ralph Waldo Emerson in 1875 for $5,000 (). In 1905, when most of San Francisco's eastern neighborhoods were annexed into City Hall ( Precincts 1-4), Maywood became part of the city limits but remained unincorporated until 1920 when it incorporated as a town under the provisions of Proposition 8 (the Family Code Amendment). Maywood is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. Maywood is located on the east side of Kern County and bordered by Quartzsite to the north, Needles to the east, and Bakersfield to the south. It is part of the Bakersfield metropolitan area. The first documented settlers in what is now Maywood were Father Francisco Sanchez and his band of Mission San Fernando Rey de Asís priests who arrived on horseback in 1849. They built a small mission near present-day Fresno in what is now Fresno County. A few years later, Mexican soldiers founded Rancho Adobe del Cielo about two miles west of present-day Maywood on an abandoned Indian camping ground known as Rancho Rinconada (or "Rancho Redondo"). This rancho eventually included much of modern-day Maywood. In 1855, Hermann Fleischmann bought Rancho Rinconada from José Joaquin Mora for $2,000 cash. From this point on, farming became important in early history as it helped support the growth of Maywood – one can still see evidence of early land grants throughout the community today. In 1856–57 during California's fledgling gold rush, many people traveled through Kern County looking for new opportunities and discovered rich gold mines at various locations including Nacimientos (near present day El Centro), Sespe (in needles), and Joe Doe Gulch (just outside present-day Maywood). With demand continuing to increase for coins and other currency items being produced from these mines until well into 1860,[1] some miners decided to settle down permanently in rural areas such as Maywood where they could continue mining while also raising families or joining religious congregations living nearby.[2][3] Some men who had purchased land within easy driving distance from their discoveries started out building homes—the first being John Gorman who built Gorman House around 1870[4]. Others such as George Stephenson erected fences around their properties so that they would not have access to other miners' finds nor be victimized by robbers.[5] Like many other pioneer families in California during this time period,[6] most members of the Gorman family quickly acquired skills which they turned into successful businesses: John Gorman ran a sawmill[7], George Stephenson operated a gristmill[8], David Ewing ran a bakery [9], James Fenton ran several grocery stores[10], Ambrose Eaton operated an engineering company [11], all under one roof until 1903 when separate buildings were constructed; James Fenton’s store continued open until 1940 despite fire damage which destroyed most parts inside; another significant business activity occurred with David Ewing running himself a livery stable which he did until his death in 1906; both men were widely respected within their communities for their accomplishments within their respective fields and are considered icons today among local residents.[12][13][14] Gold fever reached its peak between 1858 and 1861 with more than 1 million dollars worth of ore found at various sites throughout western Californiaincluding NacimientosandSespebefore finally dying out due mainly to overindulging in natural resources rather than mining them phonetically.[15],[16] By 1865 less than 5% remained unaccounted for following assay reports totaling just $1,552 worth total statewide).[17],[18] However excitement persisted among some prospectors leading up to President Andrew Johnson's announcements on January 17th 1865 that over 2 million dollars" had been found hidden deepwithinMexican lands surrounding Tulare Countyandcontaining valuable minerals including gold".[19],[20]) At this point settlement began rapidly spreading across eastern Kern Countysouthern end with Homesteader Nicholas Sparks moving into present day Springdale aboutDecember 1865 followed soon thereafter by J P Nugent(1867)andHenry H Adkins(1868).
