Maywood was founded in 1868 by W. H. Maynard and his wife, Julia. The original town was on the east bank of the Sacramento River, about a mile south of present-day downtown Sacramento. In 1872, Maynard subdivided the land and started downriver shipping on the new Diebold Navigation Company's Sacramento River Bridge. The area around present-day Maywood developed slowly due to lack of transportation and other factors until World War II when it exploded with growth thanks to military recruitment and housing needs in Northern California. The post-World War II boom brought new development in what is now downtown Maywood, as well as further north along I-5 through Saugus into Red Bluff and beyond.
