Maywood, California is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 3,852 at the 2010 census. It lies on the eastern edge of the San Joaquin Valley and is adjacent to Bakersfield and Tulare Counties. The townsite was organized in 1856 by James Maynard and others as a result of a land grant from Rancho Sacramento. The town's name comes from an old Spanish word meaning " pimple." In 1859, the Los Angeles & Pacific Railroad built tracks through Maywood and it began to grow rapidly. By 1870, most of the people had left for Angel Hills or for central California because of high prices for farmland there. A few families remained until around 1920 when they too were driven out by roundup then Prohibition-era prices for alcohol that made farming unprofitable. In 1926, Mayor Harry Sizemore founded what would become Kern County's first public library which still exists today within the current boundaries of Maywood Park with its own library building (now used as housing). On December 15th 1928 Kern County voters approved Measure V which created two new counties; Kerns was formed east of Fresno while Merced County was created west of Fresno. In 1955 Mayor John Winters persuaded city leaders in nearby Livermore to annex part of Maywood into their city limits so that Maywood could have more services available such as water and sewer lines but no other infrastructure development occurred until after his death in 1984 when Mayor Tom Bates took office and annexed all but one block off of Livermore's east side into town limits making it possible for businesses to open up shop there again! Willard and his brother-in-law, Wm. Fenton. In 1875, the first post office was established inMaywood by George Hanks and Charles Ackerly. By 1880, there were six stores and one hotel in Maywood. In 1886, the Los Angeles Railroad reachedMaywoodside with its line from downtown LA to Gilroy via Sleepy Hollow Road east of town. This made it possible for people living east ofLA to access goods they could not get locally because they had to drive miles downroad to reach local markets or shops. This opened up new opportunities for businesses in Maywood as well as other towns along the rail line such as Gilroy and Stockton which began to grow rapidly around this time
