On November 3, 1912 a fire destroyed many buildings including the old courthouse and jail in downtown Maywood and Adobe Walls emerged as a new settlement nearby known as Westville; thisenterprise continued until 1915 when all but three buildings were destroyed by a series of wild fires that burned through central Kern County during 1913-14known then as the Great Western Firestorm ().
