Maywood is a census-designated place in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 5,848 at the 2010 census. Maywood is southeast of Bakersfield and northwest of Fresno. The first post office in Maywood was established on December 17, 1892. It was renamed to its present name on October 14, 1907. The area now comprising Maywood was first inhabited by the Mono people who lived near the confluence of the Tuolumne and San Joaquin Rivers. They may have been abandoned when their land became available for white settlement following the Mexican–American War in 1846. White settlers first arrived in what is now Maywood in 1865 when James Irvine drove a team of horses overland from Stockton via Chino Creek to found Irvine Rancho de la Vieja (Irvine Valley). In 1876, John Sutter bought rancho Las Animas from Manuel Nieto for $2 million after he had surveyor William Richardson point out that there were no water sources or other grazing opportunities within miles of his new property boundaries. American River Water Company began farming on the site in 1886; it later became part of Southern Pacific Railway'sranchtown section called Union Station which includes portions of today's Compton and EngleWOODS neighborhoods. In 1889, Los Angeles County granted incorporation to Kern County with a three-member board including president George Hearst and commissioners Elias Howe and Wm Hite; this made Los Angeles County one unit with less autonomy than either countys east of San Francisco Bay Area (Los Angeles), Santa Barbara County (Santa Barbara), or Orange County (Orange). In 1905, when local citizens approved annexation by Kern County even though they did not have representation on the county board due to their political affiliation with Los Angeles City Councilmember Angelina Jolie—the city had become an independent municipality within Los Angeles County—Maywood residents voted 0% against annexation as well as more than two dozen other communities within Kern Countysince then enjoyed immunity from state inheritance taxes (). The first stagecoach route traveled through Maywood on its way between Stockton and Sacramento in the 1850s. By 1870, the town had a Methodistchurch, two schools, two stores and over fifty residents. In 1875, the Maywoods were visited by President Ulysses S Grant while he was on his way to visit other Western states. He stopped at Maywood for dinner before continuing his journey westward.

By 1969, Maywood had reached its peak population size and was considered one of the most diverse communities in Southern California.
