Maywood is a small town located in Kern County, California. It was founded in 1879 by George May and his wife Lillie. The original site of the town was on the banks of the Kern River, about two miles east of present-day Maywood. George May died in 1882 and Lillie took over management of the town. In 1889, she donated land to make up for a loss she had suffered when her husband's death left her with little money. The town motto is "Erected By Our Lady Helping Hand." The first school in Maywood was built on what is now the south side of Main Street. It was called Hickory Grove School until it merged with nearby East Side High School in 1925. There were also three churches in early Maywood: St John's Episcopal Church, First Baptist Church, and Methodist Church. However, these buildings no longer exist and all that remain are some farmhouses and a few streetcars that ran until 1951. The first post office opened in 1886 and continued operating until 1915. The first telephone service arrived in 1907 but only lasted for a year because it was not possible to install wires close to the riverbank where people would have had enough phone calls to justify paying for such service! The first store opened at 501 N Main Street in 1912 but it closed within a few months because there wasn't enough business to support it! In 1916, Willis Waddell started an agricultural cooperative which became one of the largest citrus groves west of the Mississippi River. When World War I ended, Waddell decided to sell his shares back to their owners so he could stay involved with farming even after the war ended! He also opened a grocery store on South Spring Street which continued operation until 1978! During World War II (1939-1945), Maywood served as Headquarters for United States Forces Southern Asia (USFSA). Afterward, most operations stopped while various members served elsewhere during peacetime or returned home afterwards; however, one man - Willis Waddell - kept running the grocery store until his retirement in 1978! In 1949-1950, many homes were built near Main Street between Hawthorne Boulevard and Indian Avenue just south of Interstate 5; this area later became known as "Maywood Heights". A new elementary school was built here between 1960-1964 along with several other buildings including an American Legion Hall which still stands today! When Interstate 5 was widened through downtown Los Angeles into its current form (I-5 North), much attention focused on MAYWOOD since it would be directly across from most businesses; however, very little happened to change or improve existing infrastructure here other than adding more parking spaces! In 1990s when USFSA HQ moved from downtown LA back into MAYWOOD proper due northward expansion plans for Downtown LA noted newly improved facilities & streetscape improvements may need revisiting given increasing population density & changing needs— henceforth becoming MAYWOOD PRIDE
On November 3, 1846, the United States acquired Rancho Maywood from Manuel Nieto for $5,000. The land had been purchased from Nieto by John C. Frémont for $10 per acre. The rancho was located in present-day Kern County and included parts of what are now Bakersfield, Moreno Valley and Riverside Counties. In 1865, the federal government auctioned off additional sections of the rancho to settlers who gradually arrived over the next few years. By 1876, all of the land within modern day Kern County had been claimed and it was divided into two portions: one including Rancho Maywood and part of today's Bakersfield area became part of California State University at Northridge while the other portion became part of what is now Claremont Colleges.
