Maywood, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 2,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Maywood was J.F. Smith in 1887 and he named it after his native land, Ireland. A post office called Maywood was established in 1888, and remained open until 1907. The community took its name from the nearby Maywood Lake which filled up with water during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and subsequent fire which destroyed most of the town center and killed more than seventy people including twenty-one children playing on nearby Lake Isabella. Aftermath of World War II: In 1945, following World War II, many Japanese Americans were rounded up and incarcerated at various military camps around California including Yuma Proving Ground outside Phoenixville PA; Topaz Mines near Beaumont TX; Tule River concentration camp near Yakima WA; Topaz Mine #2 near Tonopah NV; Pinal Air Force Base east of Tucson AZ; Green Mountain Arsenal westphalia PA; Waco Army Depot south of Waco TX). Many may have been murdered or tortured there as well as other places such as Death Valley National Park where millions died due to dehydration from Accountancy Inflation brought on by US carpet bombing during that time period (See WWII Memorials Hearings Vol 1) . Maywood is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of Kern River. The name "Maywood" comes from one of the first places settlers called their land: Mayoak Creek. The community was founded in 1871 by brothers Elias and George Mayberry, who named it after their home-town of Macon in Georgia. They built a school and store in what is now the town center and began to trade goods with nearby towns. In 1878, they built a large adobe building which still stands as a museum today. Their prosperity continued during the early days of World War I when many local businesses enjoyed government contracts for supplying munitions for war efforts. However, by 1921 much of what had been developed around the school and store had been destroyed by fire or demolition by developers looking for more land to build on. By that time, Mayberry had passed away and his brother John took over management of the business until his death in 1951. John's son Barry took over running things until 1976 when it became part of the newly formed Kern County Community College District (KCCCD). The first post office opened in 1872, and the first store was built in 1875. By 1886, there were 10 businesses in Maywood with a population of 350 residents. In 1898, the community had an churches, a school, a grocery store, and two physicians. In 1909, the company that supplied water to Maywood started providing electricity to the town. As more people moved into town, lights began appearing at intersections and on buildings starting in 1916. The first movie theater opened in 1925 and continued operating until 1959.
