The name "Maywood" may come from either Mexican or Anglo settlers who named their land after an old mission in central Mexico known as Mayorga de la Concepción (Concepcion's Meadows). In 1847, U.S. General Winfield Scott ordered all Californians to leave if they did not wish to be deported with their families, so most pioneer farmers abandoned their homes and businesses in search of new land. Many Mexicans also left because many were promised citizenship by United States President James K Polk if they agreed to move out of California and become citizens of other countries. A group led by John Sutter moved into what is now Maywood in 1859 and founded the first post office there on March 24th that year.
