Mcfarland, California is a small town located in the San Joaquin Valley of Northern California. The population was 2,691 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Trinity–Riverside Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Mcfarland were Spanish missionaries in 1769. The region now known as Mcfarland was part of Rancho Cucamonga, which was granted to Juan José Alvarado by King Philip II of Spain in 1776. In 1851, John Phebe Hitchin bought Rancho Cucamonga from John Sutter and sold it to George Hearst for $10,000. At the time of its purchase by Hearst, Rancho Cucamonga consisted of just over an acre (0.30 km²). By 1905 it had grown to 575 acres (240 ha), comprising much of present-day McFarland and parts of Porterville and Needles. The post office at Mcfarland was established on July 10, 1881; it served the community until June 15, 1913 when it became part of Bakersfield. In 1907 an oil well was drilled in what is now rural portions of east McFarland; this led to a boom in local businesses which soon overwhelmed the small town’s resources. Businesses such as grocery stores, dry goods stores and auto dealers attracted people from nearby towns and cities who enjoyed easy access to good jobs and cultural attractions like Yosemite National Park or Hollywood Studios
