The town was founded in 1907 by Judge Royce L. McFarland and his family. The first post office opened in 1909. In 1923, McFarland became a city and today it has a population of over 24,000 people. The history of Mcfarland goes back to 1907 when Judge Royce L. McFarland came to California from Michigan with his family. He purchased a rancho near what is now known as downtown Mcfarland and started a small community there called Old Town McDougal which he named for himself and his brother-in-law who had also come to California from Michigan. It wasn’t until 1912 that he established a post office at what is now known as Main Street but because of its location on an important wagon road connecting Bakersfield with Tulare County (now Kern County),McFarland quickly became one of the most important settlements in Kern County. From 1912 through 1916, Judge Royce built two jails - one on main street and one at what is now called First Street - which were later replaced by more modern facilities during World War II when Bakersfield experienced an influx of military personnel due to its strategic location as the wartime primary supply center for America’s war effort. Judge Royce also began developing land near present day downtown Mcfarland which would later become home to several businesses including Four Corners grocery store, First National Bank (later Citizens National Bank), State School #2 (later renamed San Bernardino Valley College), Driscoll Agricultural Company (later acquired by United States Steel) and many other businesses over the years including Cement Works Ltd., Ford Motors Division #1 & 2 (later absorbed into Chrysler Corporation), Pritchett Dairy Farm & Creamery (acquired by John Deere AG) and finally Bear Valley Landfill where various industries have taken place such as Refineries Incorporated (#4; later ExxonMobil Corporation) followed by Sam’s Club Headquarters before it closed down in 2003 following multiple fires that destroyed much of their property nearby The oil industry arrived in town during World War II when General Petroleum Company decided to build their own refinery here after observingBakerfield’s importance as both an export center for petroleum products destined for Japan[7]andas production base for munitions made at local mills used to produce steel beams needed for naval vessels During this time period several buildings still remain standing in downtown McfarLAND including Original Post Office building dating back to 1909,[8]the Justice Building ([9]),the Municipal Building ([10])which still holds public functions such as meetings and auctions held there each year[11],andRoyce L McMarflander Hall [12], all currently occupied by different organizations or companies
The first Europeans to visit Mcfarland were the Spanish in 1769. The town was founded by A.J. Fenton on a small rancho at the head of Pico Creek, about 12 miles east of present-day Sacramento. In 1853, gold was discovered in nearby Sutro Mines andMcfarland became one of the most successful mining towns in California. With its rich gold and silver deposits, Mcfarland prospered for many years until World War II caused a significant decline in its economy. However, since then, the town has slowly regained some of its former prominence as a bedroom community for Sacramento County and other rural areas around it.
