Mcfarland is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 5,123 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salinas–San Luis Obispo–Paso Robles Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The first Europeans to encounter and map the area were Costanzo de Narváez and Francisco Pacheco on October 7, 1769 while exploring what is now Bakersfield. They named it "Nahualcoyotl" (the Topaz Mountain), after a nearby mountain peak which they saw as reddish-orange against the blue sky.
In 1821, Mexican land grantee Juan Bautista Alvarado named it Rancho Los Nietos for his friend José Nieto who had helped him purchase parts of Rancho San Luis Obispo from Manuel Nieto. The name change came about because Alvarado's wife found an orange near McFarland Creek and called it "Nietos." In 1835, rancho Nuevo San Gabriel became part of Rancho Los Nietos when José Nieto sold his interest in it to his son Antonio Foronda.
In 1881, cattle baron John D’Arcy Phelps bought some of Alvarado's remaining land including Rancho Los Nietos and moved his herd into it from his original holdings in Adobe Valley east of Petaluma. Phelps renamed the community McFarland after himself because he found no other place with that name in the vicinity.
A post office was established at McFarland in 1892, but due to its small population growth used various names over time such as Eureka Springs until 1911 when it changed its name to Salinas; then Paso Robles until 1918; finally McFarland again effective November 1, 1951.) A train stop was also established at this location before being relocated to Paso Robles in 1915 by local railroad magnate George Eastman Ladds. After Ladds' death in 1928 there was no more trains stopping here so the depot burned down on December 10th 1931.
