As the surrounding farmland became more developed and some people started manufacturing products such as flour or soap, business began to grow for McFarlane's store as well as others along Main Street between Grove Avenue and Sierra Vista Boulevard until World War II when all but one of those businesses closed because of wartime restrictions on industry in central valley towns.
