There is a lot of coffee history in McFarland, CA. The first coffee farm was established in the mid 1800s by José Andrés Gómez and his brother Gabriel. The beans were roasted here until the early 1900s. In 1915, John Sutter founded his own coffee company in nearby Sacramento, which became Empire Coffee Company. One of the most notable pioneers of modern day espresso culture was Luigi Maggiore who opened his first espresso shop in 1922 in San Francisco's Financial District. In 1824, a rancho was granted to Manuel Nieto and his wife María de la Laguna for the purpose of cultivating and exporting coffee beans. In 1865, Fernando Cruz purchased the rancho from Nieto. The couple continued to grow and export their coffee until 1892 when they sold their interest in the business to Ricardo Flores Maga. From 1893-1896, Flores Maga ran a cooperative with other farmers called Los Angeles Coffee Company which exported its coffee through various ports in California. After 1896, many small farms became associated with Flores Maga's company as it became more dominant in the industry.

It is said that the area now known as Mcfarland, California was first settled by the Ohlone people in the late 18th century. The area was named after Captain John McLaughlin who founded a post on Rancho San Miguel de Aguayo in 1834. The town of McFarland was established in 1909 and became a census-designated place (CDP) in 1959. As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 20,883 people living in Mcfarland CDP. The median household income was $54,469 and the population density was 2,611.8 people per square mile (927.2/km²). There were 12,382 housing units at an average density of 1,093.8 per square mile (456.4/km²).

In 1847, the first post office was established at Mcfarland, California. The first store in the town was built by W. H. Griggs and opened on July 1, 1847. In 1850, a school was established in the town and continued until it closed in 1870.
