Mcfarland is a small, unincorporated community in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 585 at the 2010 census. The community is located on the eastern edge of Kern County and surrounds the smaller communities of Bakersfield and Isbell. The name "McFarland" likely originated from early Spanish traders who used to stop there on their way to and from missions in Bakersfield. There are only two sources that list this as an origin: one source says it comes from the fact that it was close to a meandering creek called McFarlane Creek; while another source claims that early residents named their post after General James McDowell's armada which landed there during the Mexican-American War in 1846. A post office was established at McFarland in 1878, and remained in operation until it was closed by the US Postal Service in 1907. The community took its current form when residents platted what is now its core area around a large water tower built about 1912. It became incorporated as a village in 1932.
