Mcfarland is a small town in Fresno County, California, United States. The population was 7,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Mendoza Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now called Mcfarland was first settled by Mexicans in 1847. The name may be derived from "malfa," meaning "hay" or "crop." In 1859, John A. McFarlane founded the oil company Imperial Oil Company and named his town after its founder. McFarlane's son and successor, Roy Lyle McFarlane, added an additional word - land - to make it Mcfarland Oilfield District #1. In 1980, Roy Lyle McFarlane's widow sold their share in the company to Texaco for $27 million. In 1923, Jens Jensen became manager of the local water system and built a dam on the San Joaquin River which served as a municipally owned filtration plant until 1959 when it was leased to Southern Pacific Railroad for $2 per acre (0·45 ha). In 1951–1952 Jens Jensen donated land to Fresno State University for its Agricultural Experiment Station (now Haas School of Business) campus on what is now McClaren Drive near Watertown Road. The university has since moved out of that property but continues to use some remnants of it as student housing today. In 1978, Valley National Bank merged with First Interstate National Bank and opened two branches in McFarland: one at Main Street and one at Vallejo Boulevard near Mission Hills Elementary School; Valley National also had a branch located at 4100 Wimpole Way in Chico before that closed in 1988. On September 1st 1990 ChevronTexaco announced plans to construct an open-pit gas well adjacent to Vallejo Boulevard between missions Hills Elementary School and Chico High School; this well would be known as Chevron North America Well No 9C4ZH2P9XS7LK & will produce natural gas liquids rather than gasoline or oil products like those currently produced at nearby Vallejo Boulevard & 4100 Wimpole Way facilities…. At that time there were no regulations requiring companies involved with developing new gas wells within 500 feet (150 m) of schools so this well posed a serious threat both to public health & safety; immediately following this announcement community reaction ranged from fear & speculation about what kind of environmental impact this would have (& continued throughout drilling works ~ 5 months later when finally all data available indicated very minimal environmental impact), through anger & frustration over being forced into such an unplanned development without any prior warning….. later that year ChevronTexaco notified school district officials they were withdrawing their application for permits regarding the planned open-pit gas well because they felt “the potential social impacts associated with hosting such an unsolicited event” were too high
The town of Mcfarland, California was founded on November 3, 1853 by John T. McFarland and Elijah B. Smith. The town was named for Captain John T. McFarlane who fought in the Mexican-American War and also served as a member of the Board of Supervisors for Los Angeles County from 1867 to 1875. On July 1, 1889, the towns of Whittier andlet were merged into Mcfarland.
