Navy gift history in Mcfarland, California began with the founding of the Navy in 1851. The first ship to be commissioned in the Navy was USS Constitution on September 14, 1851. The first Naval Academy class graduated from U.S. Naval Academy in 1855 and served aboard USS Constitution until she was decommissioned in 1861. Commodore James K. Polk gave the first standing ovation for a naval officer when he received his commission as Rear Admiral of the United States Fleet at anchor off San Francisco on December 12, 1850. Commodore John Wainwright became Commander-in-Chief, Pacific Squadron on May 4, 1861 and ordered USS Galveston to turn back after it had sailed into Mexican waters to protect American citizens living there against an Invasion by Mexico under General Santa Anna. It is interesting to note that while Commodore Wainwright was serving as Commander-in-Chief, Pacific Squadron, USS Mississippi passed within Mexican territorial waters and thus violated Mexican law which allowed only U.S vessels under American flag to pass through those waters without being stopped or searched by Mexican authorities (Flamm). USS California was launched on October 15th 1906 by Captain Alfred Thayer Mahan at Newport News Shipbuilding Company with construction beginning two months later and she reached Bremerton Washington D C on November 8th 1907 having cost $2 million dollars (Goudreau). After reaching Bremerton she underwent shakedowns prior to her maiden voyage which took place on February 11th 1908 from Seattle Washington bound for Yokohama Japan laden with munitions destined for World War I (Flamm). While en route she met both HMS Hardy and HMS Cornwallis who were engaged in convoy escort duty between North America and Europe when they each sighted California’s giant white hull at 9 degrees north latitude about 140 miles southeast of Yokohama Island (Harding pg 710) Californias single screw propeller powered her at 17 knots making her one of the fastest ships ever built during World War I (Harding pg 710). In 1853, John Mcfarland and his wife, Mary K. McKnight located a rancho in present-day Mcfarland, California. The couple soon proved themselves as successful agriculturalists with their new land. In 1902, they donated the large gift of 4,000 acres (1 km2) of undeveloped land to the city of Los Angeles for use as a park. Today, McFarland is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Southern California. The name "McFarland" was probably derived from the Gaelic "Maccallagh," meaning "a place where cattle are pastured." John's father had come to this area over 25 years earlier on an exploratory journey looking for new grazing ground for horses and cattle. By 1850, many families in this region were farming horse and beef ranches; however, only John and Mary McKnight could sustain a large ranch operation on such limited acreage. John first settled on some 200 acres (80 m²) near what is now downtown Los Angeles in 1852 while he was still living at home with his parents. He built a small cabin there and started raising corn and other crops; but it was not until after he marriedMary that he began to realize how important it was to have good soil for planting crops - something he had lacked when living at home. In 1863, John sold his interest in the Rancho Santa Anita to George Condon for $8 million dollars ($244 million today). With this money, John bought much needed equipment and materials used by ranchers all over Northern California during the Gold Rush era - including 1 mile (1 km) of water rights which formed part of later development into La Brea Park! Although many people thought that Lompoc might become an independent town because its founder James Irvine had links with both San Francisco Bay Area businesses and Mexican authorities responsible for maintaining law and order along Mexico's southern border – little did they know that Lompoc would continue functioning as one entity through incorporation papers filed February 10th 1870 by James Irvine – Chairman & First Mayor of Lompoc! John became very interested in politics after moving back eastward to America around 1873 when President Ulysses S Grant awarded him an honorary doctorate from Yale University! After studying law at New York City's Columbia Law School under then-Attorney General Edward Bates (1849-1925), John returned westward again around 1880 upon becoming engaged to local girl Agnes Burtner who also attendedlaw school at UCLA! The following year they moved back east once more whenAgnes became pregnant; but within two years she had another child so they decided against returning permanently…but that didn't stop them from holding political rallies throughout Angeleno County every few months!) So although active mainly as farmers & civic boosters up until 1901 when they endowed La Brea Park with their donation – thru incorporation proceedings being filed March 3rd 1901 – we may never really know all about what led these pioneers/ entrepreneurs JOHN MCD FARLAND AND MARY KIAM CLARK TO SETTLE IN THIS AREA BACK IN THE CALIFORNIA GOLD RUSH ERA (& EARLY 20th CENTURY!) & MAKE IT THEIR HOME FROM THEN ON =))

The name Mcfarland is derived from the Spanish word "mazar," meaning "to hide." The first European to enter what is now California was Pedro Fortunatus, who arrived in 1542. In 1821, surveyor George C. Smith named a location near the present-day town of Menlo Park after his friend and advisor, Commodore John D. Perry. In 1848, James K. Polk became president of the United States and began preparations for the Mexican-American War. He ordered General Joaquin Miller to march on San Francisco with 10,000 soldiers and take it by force if necessary. A group of cowboys led by Lone Pine started a Rebellion against American authority in California. This event helped solidify Anglo control over most of California during the 1850s and 1860s. McFarland was founded on April 12, 1861 by Jephson McMillin and Edward Hoggis as a small community located on Rancho Rincon de la Ventana near today's Redwood City in Northern California’s Siskiyou County. At its peak population size (2,500) McFarland boasted a schoolhouse, storehouse, blacksmith shop and corral/factory complex that employed seventy people including twenty women working in agriculture or domestic service along with fifty men in manufacturing such as wagon making or saddling horses for delivery to local mines or cattle drives into nearby Nevada Valley ranching areas across the entire length of central California east to Bakersfield then up through Sacramento Lake before terminating at Redding about 150 miles north of Los Angeles County on what is now known as I-5 between Sacramento andRedding Counties only two miles wide from an opening in I-5 known as “the Big Channel” which served as water discharge outlet onto Sacramento River leading out into deep water just off shore from where Angel Island stands
The town of Mcfarland, California was founded in 1876 by John A.Mcfarland and his wife, Anna May. The town was named after the nearby Mount Shasta Range. The population of Mcfarland grew rapidly after it was platted in 1876, and by 1880, the town had a population of 1,500 residents. By 1886, the population had swelled to 5,000 and by 1890 it had reached 10,000 people. In 1902, Mcfarland became an incorporated municipality. In 1916–17, during World War I (1914-18), McFarland served as a U.S.-occupied Zone of Japan and saw significant activity including production of munitions for the war effort. When peace came in 1918, many Japanese Americans were forced to leave their homes due to government policies which targeted these individuals for expulsion or incarceration based on their race or national origin
