One such person was J A McFarlane who arrived circa 1880 () after purchasing 640 acres adjacent to present-day town center from Captain Samuel Halliday (). Shortly thereafter he married local girl Lillie Bellefleur () ; they raised two children before moving away around 1890 when gold proved elusive again (.
