Deputy Milner was shot dead during an outdoor pursuit on July 23rd, 1951 while serving with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office Department when he ran into an alleyway filled with six men who had just stolen a car belonging to Deputy Milner’s superior officer. The suspects surrendered after firing three shots at deputy Milner before running into an adjacent house where they took refuge from deputies pursuing them inside. One suspect fired two rounds at deputy Milner before fleeing outside and jumping into a moving car which was stopped by deputy Milner; one round hit him square in the face and he died instantly from his injuries. A year later on December 5th, 1952 another revolver was given away when Rufus Ahern donated his single-shot .22 caliber Ruger Blackhawk revolver to McFarland residents Mrs Helen Appleby and Mr Elisha Sprague “with kind words expressed through Mrs Appleby being particularly interested in antique firearms since her husband had passed away some time ago suddenly leaving her Gift quite regretted by us both however we have daily use of this fine weapon & enjoy its conformation every time we fire it uprange [sic] I hope you like it just like we do our old Smith & Wesson revolver I got when I joined the department 10 years ago
