The name McFarland comes from Spanish and means "big field." The first European to visit this area were the Russians in 1821. Rancho San Bernardino was given to Juana Sanchez de la Parra by her husband, Juan Rodríguez de Monterey. In 1847, Mission San Gabriel became the center of mission activity in this area and began issuing land grants to local residents. In 1881, a group of investors led by James Wickersham bought Rancho Santa Ana from José Arguelles for $5 million dollars. Wickersham named his new rancho after himself – McFarland (pronounced "mah-farr-lay"). This large land grant included much of what is now southern Los Angeles County and northern Ventura County. At that time it was still considered part of Mexico due to its location on the border with Presidio Real Mexico City (although it had been claimed by various Mexican families since before that). During World War II, many people who lived near Chatsworth Ravine worked on defense projects such as enriching uranium resources or making munitions during the war years when plutonium production became possible after Smelting ore deposits at Hanford Site in Washington state were developed into black gold by American miners working with Japanese help under Operation Maru (1946-48). Many citizens moved away during those years because they could not support themselves living near a military installation where there was no job security or opportunity for advancement; instead they relocated closer to family members or friends who lived nearby and supported them economically. After World War II ended, many people returned home but did not live as close together as they had before because their homes had been confiscated by government officials who used them for housing troops stationed in Southern California until 1951 when they sold them all off to developers for use as military barracks and other purposes! Many families continued living near military installations until their retirements ended in 1984 when the last base closed down – Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base! Afterward most retired couples decided to move back into one place close enough so they could keep touch without having to go far away each time someone died or went off duty somewhere else! Most former servicemen also decided against moving back into civilian lives once their tours were finished rather than commute long distances every day just so they could see their wives and children only once a year! Today there are still some very active military members living among us but mostly we are retirees now living alone or with our children scattered around different parts of the country while we continue keeping up email contact with our parents—a practice that started centuries ago among Native Americans and continues today among American Civilians!!!!!

On January 3, 1912, Humble merged with neighboring towns of Lubbock and Van Nuys to form a new city called Los Angeles.
