Mendota is a town in San Joaquin County, California. The population was 1,843 at the 2000 census. It was founded in 1853 by Traverse City settlers and named for General George Custer. Mendota is located on the banks of the Sacramento River, about 20 miles (32 km) east of Fresno. The town began as a trading post on the riverbank, soon becoming an agricultural center with irrigation systems and other innovations to improve agriculture around the turn of the century.
