Mendota, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. The population was 5,780 at the 2010 census. Mendota is located in Kern County, between Bakersfield and San Bernardino Counties. Mendota's geography ranges from rolling hills to fertile valleys that are home to agriculture and orchards. The first Europeans to visit Mendota were the Franciscan missionaries who came here in 1821 looking for a place to plant Missionaries Bayonett trees which they considered an important part of Christianity's spread throughout America. When they found no suitable land they decided to head east instead and founded Mission San Francisco de Asis on the banks of the Sacramento River in 1795. They named their settlement after General José Joaquin Santa Anna who had been driven out of Mexico by Commodore John Adams during the Mexican–American War. The name "Mendoza" was given to them by General Miguel Mariano Mora y Saenz who led an expedition against American forces under General Antonio Vallejo on November 16, 1814 at Rancho Los Nietos (now known as Rancho San Bernardino), about 12 miles south of present day Mendota. From then until 1848 when it became part of Kern County, Mendota was called simply "Mendoza". In 1847, gold was discovered near Ensenada and so dry farming became common among local farmers because there was no way for water carts carrying goods upriver to reach them from towns on either side of the river. This led to increased traffic on I-5 which passed through town en route from Bakersfield downriver; this caused some stores and businesses along Main Street (now US 101) closure as customers could not get products fast enough from other stores downstream! In response, many people began building homes around town rather than trying to get involved with commercial activities which made life more difficult for those living close by but allowed access to all types of natural resources needed for subsistence farming such as corn, beans, wheat, grapes and apples! One result of this increased traffic was that new roads were built into Mendota specifically for trucking goods across I-5; these included Dunlap Road which leads south from town center towards Bakersfield while Hiwassee Road goes north towards Needles Airport in Tuolumne County). Today you can still see some traces of these roads including a bridge over I-5 just outside town limits where trucks used to cross constantly! It wasn't until 1959 when Mendota incorporated as a city! At that time its population stood at 2,500 residents with a total land area only slightly larger than today’s city boundaries! With its rapidly growing economy – largely based around agriculture – municipal services grew gradually more complex with sewers being built between downtown and rural areas; lighting upgrades were funded through Measure AJI (the 1960s annexation program); zoning changes were made for agricultural use; parks & recreation developed; streetlights got installed; water main construction started… etc., MendOTA has come full circle: nowadays it enjoys one significant distinction: it is both largest municipality within Kern County without annexation into neighboring counties (#1 according) but also lowest per capita ranking (#24th largest city in CA overall), due mostly (but not exclusively)to its smaller size relative both geographically (~$25K/year/$60K per capita!) but also economically (~$2K/year/$7000 per capita!). Today there are over 10 thousand residents living within our borders making us one very diverse community…. There are numerous cultural organizations represented including music festivals celebrating Hispanic culture year-round (mainly Latino events), art galleries situated throughout our downtown core featuring rotating international painters or sculptors every few weeks or so….. We have two major high schools [Mendotta High School]and three elementary schools [Civic Center School District], we have two shopping centers-[Edgewood Shopping Center & Roosevelt Park Place], two hospitals[Sierra Vista Medical Center & Kaiser Permanente Medical Center], four churches affiliated with mainline denominations[Anglican Community Church & Catholic Community Church Of Angelseno,[ Lutheran / Protestant - Evangelical Lutheran Synod Sacramenti Dei Congregation],[ Baptist / Methodist - Baptist Bible Chapel]), plus several dozen residences scattered throughout unincorporated portions of KernCounty contributing greatly too our diversity….. Our airport provides primary service(s)for aircraft traveling primarily within adjacent counties except Riverside County whose airport provides general aviation services( principally hunting/fishing operations). Although currently experiencing significant decline due mainlyto competition from nearby airports providing better air quality options(* * * ), we remain confident that future growth will be modest if not minimal based upon current trends

In 1916, the city of Mendota was incorporated and began to grow rapidly. In 1933, Mendota became an unincorporated community again. The population reached its peak in 1954 when it had over 200 residents. After declining during the 1970s and 1980s, the population of MendOTA has since started to increase again with recent multi-million dollar developments proposals being made for the townspeople including new shopping malls and industrial areas. Today, Mendota has a population of around 300 people and continues to grow due to its wide variety of services and attractions available within its boundaries including numerous schools as well as churches, libraries, businesses, art galleries and more!
