Mendota is a town in California, United States. The population was 8,557 at the 2010 census. Mendota is located in northern Kern County on the east bank of the Pershing River and southeast of Bakersfield. Mendota is part of the Bakersfield–Arroyo Grande metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Mendota were Jedediah Smith and his party in 1817 when they journeyed from central California overland from Santa Fe. They passed through what is now Mendota on their way northward. In 1838, surveyor George Harker mapped what would become Mendota Township on his trip across Central Valley from Stockton to Sacramento. He named it after John A. Dutton, a wealthy agriculturalist who had donated land for an ecclesiastical seminary at Eureka Springs near today's Harker Dam National Recreation Area south of downtown Bakersfield; Dutton also donated money for a road leading to the new township—the only one in Kern County at that time. Mendota grew rapidly during World War II as many soldiers returning home found work here building military facilities around Bakersfield and other parts of Kern County. After the war ended, much of the growth slowed but nevertheless Mendota has seen steady population growth since its incorporation as a village in 1955 with just under 1,000 residents (the Town Council had no power to make decisions without voter approval).
