Mendota, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California, located in Mendocino County. The town was founded in 1887 by John Sutter and his brother-in-law Jedediah Smith. Mendota became a city on July 1, 1893. The population of Mendota reached its peak in 1916 with over 102,000 people. However, the population plummeted after World War I and has decreased since then. Today, Mendota is an agricultural community with a small retail presence. Mendota's history can be traced back to 1887 when John Sutter and his brother-in-law Jedediah Smith came to the area looking for land to settle. They found some good land but were not able to homestead it because of the hardness of the earth. In 1892 they built a cabin on what is now known as Sutter Street in downtown Mendota. In 1916, when Mendota had a population of 102,000 people, it was one of the largest cities in California. However, during World War I (1914-18), the city lost many residents due to military service or moving away for wartime activities. In 1920 the city voted to become an incorporated village under state law; however it never achieved much growth until after World War II when new industries began arriving in Mendota like aircraft manufacturing and farming machinery production which helped drive local economic growth over time
