Mendota, California is a small city located in the Central Valley of California. It has been a naval base for over 80 years and became known as the "Navy Capital of the World." The Mendota Naval Air Station was opened in 1938 and served as home to the United States Navy's first operational fighter squadron. The station closed in 1994 but its legacy lives on in the form of two museums: one dedicated to aviation history, and one devoted to navy ships and personnel. Today, Mendota is also home to two major warships: USS Constitution (the original ship built at Mendota NAS) and USS Enterprise (the last battleship ever commissioned). In 1941, after Pearl Harbor had happened, the United States Navy decided that it would no longer be able to rely on Carrier based operations which were vulnerable to Japanese attack. Therefore, they ordered Congress to provide them with an Aircraft carrier capable of providing air cover for amphibious assaults. Accordingly,USS Enterprise was ordered from her builder – Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company – and was christened USS Enterprise CV-3 on 21 July 1941. She arrived at Mare Island Naval Shipyard on 28 October 1941 where she underwent modification including installation of a new hangar tower and catapult system. On 14 December 1941 she set sail for her new deployment destination; Pearl Harbour! After reaching Hawaiian waters on 5 January 1942 she commenced airstrikes against Japan's capital city Tokyo before disembarking her troops for another campaign against Japan proper! After participating in thiscampaign off Hawaii for nine months she sailed back home via Eniwetok Atoll on 3 May 1942 having escorted USAAF bombers into Japan during their bombing offensive! For these services she was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation (PUC).On 15 September 1945 President Harry S Truman announced that Okinawa had been liberated from Japanese occupation following three years of Hellfire missions by American forces under general MacArthur! As a result, all hostilities between America and Japan ended!The end of World War II saw many changes take place within both nations involved; some good while others not so much. On 1 March 1947 Congress passed Public Law 95-542 which provided for demobilization of all military forces within 10 days following cessation of hostilities overseas! This marks the beginning of what would become known as the " Pentagon Myth ", or how far post-war America went in order to keep control over its once powerful military machine!Following demobilization came what can only be called "The Golden Age"of navy deployments; this period lasted until about 1975 when things began to unravel with Watergate rocking Washington D C . All eyes were then turned towards Europe where there was growing concern about Soviet penetration into Western Europe through submarine cables!. Consequently, plans were made for an ambitious warship buildup which ultimately didn't materialize however several high profile deployments did occur during this time such asOperation Neptune's Spear which invaded Afghanistan in 2001!, Operation Coral Sea which fought off Australian forces at sea near Christmas Island in 1991!,and Operation Desert Storm which ledto Saddam Hussein fleeing Kuwaiti soil!. In total there have been over 60 naval deployments across different oceans throughout our country’s history!!!
