Mendota is a small town in the Central Valley of California, United States. The population was 6,539 at the 2010 census. Mendota is part of the Fresno-Tulare Combined Statistical Area. Mendota is located in Fresno County, east of Fresno and northwest of Hanford. Mendota stretches for about northeast to southwest along the banks of the Kern River and includes parts of both Fresno and Tulare Counties as well as some unincorporated areas. According to the US Census Bureau, Mendota has a total area of , all land. The town was named after Moses Hinton Mendota (1809-1882), an American lawyer and politician who served as Mayor of Fresno from 1872 to 1876 and again from 1881 to 1886. The first post office in Mendota opened on July 10, 1860, under the name "Fresno". In 1880, it changed its name to "Mendota" after Moses Hinton's father-in-law, Hiram Atherton Morse (1794-1865). In 1909, another post office called "MendOTA" opened in nearby Menifee but closed within a few years due to low mail volume. In 1934–35 there was a dispute over property lines between two adjacent families which led to what is now known as Big Bend Canyon Road/Upper Kern River Road becoming one road with access from both directions through MendOTA village—a community that had been founded by settlers just south of where Upper Kern River Road current meets Big Bend Canyon Rd., southeast of today's Menifee Center shopping mall complex.—the only access point into or out of this newly formed village until 1963 when roads were added upstream inside present day MendOTA boundaries (i.e., still within today's Menifee Center). Mendota is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California, about 22 miles (35 km) east of Fresno and 10 miles (16 km) southwest of Stockton. The community was founded in 1887 by Jedediah Smith and his wife Elizabeth Pacheco as a mission station on the banks of the Sacramento River, south of what is now Redding. In 1907, Mendota became an incorporated town. The Mendota–Fresno Chamber of Commerce has been active in promoting trade and cultural events in Mendota since its establishment.
