The median family income for Mendota was $92,083 in 2010. The community is named after George Armstrong Custer who fought in the Mexican-American War and died at the Battle of Buena Vista Creek. Mendota began as a small farming village onoyoak (now called Redondo Beach) Creek near present day downtown Mendota. A post office was established there on February 14th, 1872 by Simeon Bogue with the name "Redondo Beach". It moved to its present location on Baker Road near what is now Hearst High School in 1875. In 1907 when Mendota became an incorporated town it had a population of only 227 people but by 1960 its population had increased to 1,527 people making it one of the fastest growing towns in California during that time period. In recent years Mendota has become known for its agricultural activities with produce such as apples and grapes being exported to other parts of California and abroad.

Mendota is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California, located about 20 miles east of Fresno. It was founded in 1868 by George Washington Dixon and named for Mendota Creek. The early settlers were farmers and their families who raised crops and raised livestock. In the 1920s, Mendota became an agricultural center with a population of about 350 people. Mendota has experienced significant growth over the years, thanks to its location and its access to major highways. The area has seen a dramatic increase in housing development, as well as businesses that provide services such as restaurants, medical offices, and schools. Mendota also continues to experience strong cultural attractions including the Mendota Folklife Center which features traditional Americanmusic and dance performances; the Mendota Museum of Art which contains art from various periods; and the Mendota Stadium which is home to both football (the first professional team in MendOTA)and basketball (the current name for Menlo Park High School). The history of MendOTA begins with George Washington Dixon who settled here in 1868 after arriving on horseback from Missouri via California’s Central Valley region. He purchased 640 acres near present-day Tuolumne Meadows at what is now known as Dixon Station on Winchester Road adjacent to today’s village of Wenden. Dixon had come across cattle being driven southward through his land on his way from Missouri so he decided upon this site as a place where he could raise them himself – something no one else was doing at that time! By 1870, there were several buildings on the property including a store, blacksmith shop, wagon Workshop (later renamed “Dixon”), barns/laboratories/factory etc., some Indian huts were also built at that time around today’s Village Green Drive. A post office was established at this location in 1871 under the name “Mendota” – but it never functioned because there wasn’t any mail coming into or leaving town! There wasn’t even an attempt made to rename it after George Washington Dixon himself until 1895 when local residents decided they wanted their own community name that would resonate with them longterm! In 1907 our first school opened up called East Side Schoolhouse – located just north of present day village green drive along Winchester Road opposite today’s Davis Avenue Elementary School . That same year we had our first crop yield with wheat Harvesting taking place Sept 15th 1907 .. Our millinery shop & dressmaking factory opened up next door along with my mother Mrs Edna Smith starting out making hats for womenfolk.. Mrs Smith continued running her business until she passed away in 1951 .. In 1912 we started having Electricity provided by Western Electric Company thru wire service starting inside old house then outside public road leading into town….. After 1st season electricity went out due to enemy air raid activity !! We restarted using Generator…… 1915 Our first post office open up sat right here next door inside old house later changed 3 times before closure due 4 deathly cold days during winter…. 1916 We started having telephone service thru Western Telephone Company thru wires….. 1922 First milk cow born within limits hereabouts…… 1945 Ford Tractor dealership opens up………………… 1955 First Redwood trees planted…………….. 1966 Start formally annexing Village Of Wenden……………………………………………………………………………… 1969 Mills closed down & all resources discontinued creatingVillage With Self Governing Charter…………… 1971 First truckloads of crude oil arrive from Kern County distributer HEREIN IN MENDOTA …………………………………………………………… 1974 Drugstore opens up……………. 1977 First tractor sales within limits hereabouts.................. 1978 Christmas tree set up………………………………….. 1981 inaugurated Mayor Donald Drysdale
