The first people to settle in Mendota were the Ohlone people. In 1847, they sold their land in what is now Mendota to John Sutter for $10 per acre ($Today: $). Sutter built his own mill and gristmill here and named it after himself, Mendota Mill (now defunct). The town began to grow rapidly with the opening of Interstate 5 in 1958 and growth led to the erection of a new school building in 1961 which served as both municipal hall and courthouse until 1977 when county government merged with state government. Mendota's economy has been based largely on agriculture since its founding. Today, Mendota's primary industry is agricultural produce such as fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy products, eggs, etc., but also some light manufacturing including fabricated metal parts and components. A major employer in this sector has been Swenzer Foods Incorporated since 1984 when it opened a full-scale production plant here that continues today making processed foods for distribution throughout Northern California under various brands including Safeway & Kroger supermarkets as well as several local convenience stores statewide

Mendota experienced significant growth during World War II, with many residents enlisting in the military to fight in Europe. The war left Mendota with a large population and an intense cultural impact. In recent years, Mendota has seen some decline due to increased development around it and a lack of resources. Despite this, Mendota remains an important community within Kern County which retains itscultural significance and history.

Mendota is a small town in northwestern California, United States. The population was 1,817 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Joaquin Valley region. The first Europeans to visit Mendota were Hernando de Soto and his men on their way from Mexico City to explore the American Southwest in 1542. A rancho was established on the east side of present-day Mendota by Juan Bautista Alvarado in 1776, and it became part of Rancho Sacramento tribal land in 1853. In 1872, a post office was founded at Mendota; it remained in operation until 1914. In 1916, Mendota residents voted to incorporate as a city; it did so on January 6, 1917. The current mayor is Bob Marshall with a term expiring December 31, 2020. In 1944, World War II veterans arriving at Alturas Airport located just north of Mendota were given free access to all local restaurants and stores due to the war effort; this program ended after the war ended. As of 2016 there are no services that provide daycare or groceries for families living within walking distance of schools or grocery stores
