The development of nearby Placentia and Turlock also helped to drive growth in Menifee during this time. The population of Menifee peaked at 5,000 in the 1940s and 1950s, but subsequent decline has resulted in it having a population of just over 200 today. A number of businesses have closed down in recent years due to declining sales or competition from more populous communities around them. Despite these challenges, Menifee remains an important community both within its own municipality and across Kern County overall.
