Menifee was founded in 1892 by J.C. Menifee and his wife, Lillie Menifee. The town was named after the Mount Menifee near Davis, California. At its peak in the 1920s, Menifee had a population of nearly 1,000 people. It is now a small village with a population of around 100 people. The men who first settled in Menifee were farmers who grew corn, wheat, and other vegetables for their families and local marketplaces. Over time, these farms gradually gave way to larger lumber operations and more manufacturing businesses started up in the town as well. In 1924, the Meineke Automotive Company opened up shop on Main Street in Menifee; it would later become General Motors Corporation. In recent years, there has been some redevelopment activity taking place in and around Menifee; this has included new housing developments such as Parklane Village and Pinecrest Villages as well as retail stores like Lowe’s Hardware and Kmart Supercenter. There have also been several renovated or reconstructed buildings built within the village itself such as Woolworth’s Building which served as community center until it was replaced by the current library building in 2001. Overall,Menifee has experienced many changes over time – both positive (such as increasing industrial production) and negative (such as experiencing declines in population).
