The Menifee Army Museum and Memorial Site is a small museum located in Menifee, California that preserves the history of the United StatesArmy. The museum was founded in 1990 by then-Major General James K. Polk, who had served as commanding general of the 9th Infantry Division during World War II. The current museum building opened on October 1, 1990, after years of planning and construction by local volunteers. During World War II, Menifee served as a production site for munitions for the Los Angeles area including parts used in Texas City and Monterrey. In 1957, Menifee was incorporated as a city within Ventura County with a population of 2,000 citizens. It experienced rapid growth during the 1960s due to its importance as an aerospace manufacturer and satellite ground station for regional television broadcasts from Vandenberg AFB (later Ronald Reagan National Airport). However, althoughMenifee enjoyed significant economic prosperity during this time, it also experienced some setbacks such as high rates of crime and decline in local industry which led to allegations that developers were using city resources advantageously without equitable treatment to benefit themselves instead of residents.
