Menifee is a small city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 7,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salinas–San Joaquin Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. Menifee was founded in 1879 by brothers George and Baldwin Menifee and their father. Menifee was named for Mission San Gabriel Arcangelico (1763-1846), one of several missions that were founded in Adobe Valley during the Rancho Santa Fe period. The first post office opened in Menifee on April 14, 1880. It served the community until 1893 when it moved to Salinas. In 1911, Menifee incorporated as a town under the name of Northmen. In 1916, it changed its name to Menifee after George and Baldwin’s father died suddenly while living there with his family. Menifee, California is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 44,693 at the 2010 census. Menifee was founded on March 6, 1887 by George Washington Hill and his brother-in-law J.D. Payne as an agricultural town named Menifee Valley. In 1932 the name of the city was changed to honor businessman and philanthropist John D. Rockefeller Sr.. The nearby Menifee Hills are now known for their dramatic red sandstone cliffs which offer stunning views of Los Angeles County and the San Gabriel Mountains beyond. The first post office in Menifee opened on July 9, 1887. The current Post Office Building was built in 1935 and dedicated by Mrs. Robert Culp Foster who also served as Mayor from 1933 until her death in 1951. According to the United States Census Bureau, Menifee has a total area of , of which is land and is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 45,711 people, 17,527 households, 11,859 families residing in the city proper (the most populous section), and 10/9ths of all households being composed of individuals (non-Hispanic White). As well as 10% Hispanic or Latino residents within that same population demographically speaking; however this figure does not reflect any true diversity because these residents have no right to vote or property ownership within their municipality limits due to zoning regulations enacted by Kern County government since its creation over 100 years ago! These restrictive regulations continue today through what are affectionately referred to as “Jim Crow Laws” – policies instituted during Reconstruction that discriminated against African Americans living within county boundaries without legal recourse or compensation from either local officials or federal policymakers! With such demographics still present today among those living within menagerie confines; it should come as no surprise then that only 2 out 5 City Councilmembers are currently citizens! Despite this dismal trend; few problems exist when it comes to services offered through municipal coffers such as libraries & parks maintenance; both of which continue uninterrupted thanks largely to popular support from citizens themselves!
