The Coast Guard has been a part of the community in Menifee, California for over one hundred years. The first coast guard station was established on December 12th, 1881 when Captain John S. Gooding and five men from the Menifee Volunteer Fire Company set up a small watchtower on the bluff overlooking Highway 26. In 1917, Menifee’s first public lighthouse was built and served as a warning to vessels approaching the town from inland waters. Today, there are four coast guard stations located throughout Menifee with an additional station being planned for the town of Hawthorne next year. The Coast Guard patrols coastal areas including Interstates 5 and 99 as well as all local waterways and ports. They also provide emergency services such as Search and Rescue, response to boat accidents and protect people who use our coastline against piracy or other crime. In addition to their statewide duties, each station has its own jurisdiction which includes patrolling specific parts of the county or neighborhood within that jurisdiction. For example, Station 16 in Hawthorne patrols intra-county waterways while Station 21 responds to coastal emergencies such as hurricanes or storms. Additionally, each station maintains a Detachment which provides support services such as law enforcement activities ashore or afloat; search and rescue; firefighting;and recreational boating opportunities along local waterways. The Coast Guard is family-owned and operated with more than 11 thousand employees worldwide who work together to maintain our nation's maritime security by providing public service at home and abroad through prevention of marine disasters、prompt response after disasters、and resourcefulness in meeting global challenges

Menifee takes its name from Sir Francis Drake who visited the area in 1579 and named it San Francisco de la Menifuerza after his father-in-law's estate there. In 1932, Menifee passed through the so-called "Great Depression" with high unemployment rates and little economic growth until World War II when the postwar boom brought new development to Menifee including two shopping malls which remain extant today: one anchored by Sears & Roebuck and one anchored by JCPenney. Today Menifee is known for its annual Christmas fair which draws over 100,000 people to downtown during Festival season.
