Captain Foy also encountered a large group of Indians living in what is now known as Willow Glen and he called them the Menisches because they were so different from all other tribes he had seen. In 1853, Major George Custer explored this part of California and named it after General Charles Avila Miles during his trip through North America. The name Menifee came about because when General Avila passed through this area he saw some people driving cattle down the valley and mistook them for Sioux Indians since their clothing resembled those worn by these Indians.
Menifee was originally a small, picturesque community located on Menifee Creek in the Unincorporated area of Orange County, California.
