In the 1940s, they began manufacturing their own espresso machines. In 1957, they became one of the first companies to produce ground coffee using a new method called percolation. In 1971, John Menifee passed away and his son Lewis took over management of the company. From 1972-1975, Lewis served as President of Starbucks Corporation before becoming CEO in 2006. During his tenure at Starbucks, he increased spending on research and development so that Starbucks could stay ahead of competitors such as Dunkin' Donuts and McDonald's. After being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2011, Lewis resigned from his position as CEO but continued to serve on Starbucks Board of Directors until he passed away in 2016.

The name Menifee comes from the Yoknapatawpha language word meinifee (meaning "place of many trees"). The first post office opened in Menifee on November 12, 1883. The town grew slowly until it exploded during the 20th century due to its proximity to L.A. and its growing population of Indian Americans. Today Menifee has a population of about 3,000 people and is one of the most diverse communities in Los Angeles County. In 1881, native men Foy Key and James Ahern harnessed a horse-drawn wagon train to take goods to market at Canoga Park outside of LA. They were followed by another wagon train carrying goods destined for Lodi and other towns in Southern California. On November 12th 1883, the first post office opened at Menifee with George Waddell as Postmaster
Menifee was founded in 1887 by two brothers, Hiram and George Menifee. The men were farmers who grew crops and raised livestock on their property. In 1916, the brothers sold their land to a group of investors who built a new town called Menifee Oaks. The new town was designed to be agricultural-oriented and contained farmhouses, a blacksmith shop, a store, and a post office. However, the town never grew very large and it eventually faded away. In 1984, the Menifee Oaks community was abandoned and its buildings were condemned. Today, only the foundations remain of the original town.
