His wife continued to live until her death in 1984. Today, Maria's daughter, Barbara (BARBARA MENIFEE), continues to lead the menagerie at Menifee Park and is the current Mayor pro tem of Menifee City.
Menifee was founded in 1853 by George Menifee and his wife, Lucy. The Menifees were the first to settle in what is now Menifee County, California. They built a small cabin on a hill above their farm and named it Menifee after themselves. In 1854, they married Anna Maria Smith and moved to their present home on the property. The men operated a store near the house until 1865 when they opened a store of their own at 10th Street and Highway 1. By 1870, the men had developed an acreage around their home which became known as the "Happy Valley." They continued to operate their store until 1879 when they sold it to Wm Hurlbut. In 1881, they bought land north of town for $2 per acre and began construction of what would become their largest structure-the Gristmill (now called Ryman Auditorium). The mill was completed in 1886 and became one of Menifee's most important landmarks. The mill produced flour for local grocery stores as well as export sales from California to Europe. It also served as a cultural center formensa children during summertime programming at nearby Ryman Auditorium between 1905-1910
