Menifee, California is a small city located in Kern County, California. The population was 7,235 at the 2010 census. Menifee is the county seat of Kern County. It lies on the banks of the San Gabriel River within Los Angeles County. The name Menifee comes from Mission San Gabriel Arcangelo, which was founded in 1836 by Franciscan missionaries under the leadership of Bernardino de Sahagun. The present-day town center was laid out as a Village in 1892 when it became part of what were then known as South Pasadena and Carson City townships. One of Menifee's earliest residents was George Capps who settled there in 1878 and built the first store in Menifee. In 1902, John Sutter opened his Log Cabin restaurant here that would become one of Southern California's most famous restaurants and remain open until 1984. early men who made their mark on Menifee include Wernher von Braun and Jack Warner Sr., both natives of Pasadena or nearby Monterrey; they bought land here to build Lockheed Aircraft plants during World War II (the first being an airplane factory on Gowanus Canal). Other early inhabitants included Jens Jacobsen (1896-1975), proprietor of Jacob & Sons Hardware Store; Harry Barmes (1900-1987), general manager for Union Pacific Railroad’s Western Section; Royce Pemberton (1906-1986), founder, president and CEOof Pacific Gas & Electric Company; Ralph Yarborough (1920-1996), publisher/editorial director for The Hollywood Reporter; and Edwin Ladd Jr., co-founder with his father, Edwin Ladd Sr., of Paramount Pictures Corporation. A post office called Menifee had been established in 1892, but its operation was suspended due to lack of personnel until 1896 when it reopened under the name Eastmen Place after some settlers moved into the town from Hereford Rancho Seco near Borrego Springs. In 1911, annexation by Los Angeles led to the creation of Kern County which incorporated as a separate political entity with its own government including a sheriff and judicial system unique among U States at that time - an event now commemorated by Republic Day parade through downtown LA every year on May 1st! Menifee was founded in 1878 by brothers Charles and George Menifee. The town is located in the Kern County seat of Bakersfield, about 25 miles east of Fresno. The Menifees were early settlers in Kern County, and their farmstead became a focus for agricultural production. In 1916, Menifee incorporated as a city under the name of Bakersfield. A severe drought in 1922 led to an increase in crop production and a corresponding decrease in population; however, the city prospered until the mid-1980s when it experienced rapid growth due to its location within easy commuting distance of Los Angeles. The men who first settled at Menifee Creek were farming pioneers who came from Southern California during the Gold Rush period of 1849-1853. In 1868, Charles Menifee married Mary Ewing at Catholic Church on rural property near Bakersfield that she had inherited from her father. Their son George followed his father into agriculture and built up a successful business that grew into Menifee Dry Goods Store & Grain Elevator (now part of Sam's Club). By 1928, George had sold most of his land to build what would become Menifee City Hall which still stands today inside the original building constructed in 1907 on Main Street adjacent to City Park. In 1916, after years of effort by Mayor Clarence Hirschfeld and City Councilmember Harry Jacobs, MenfeE incorporation resulted in increased prosperity for the small city with its growing population and burgeoning facilities including: a firehall, police station, library/theater complex (now known as Regency Ballroom), post office/mail room/warehouse (now known as First National Bank), four schools (elementary through twelfth grade), two parks (City Park and Recreation Area) with tennis courts and basketball courts, two movie theaters (Majestic Theatre Company & Paramount Theater Company), beer garden(later renamed Ford’s Garden Tavern), golf course(later called Pacific Country Club) and more than 100 businesses employing over 240 people during its heyday between 1916-1982 according to Business historian Byron Carlson’s book “Bakersfield – From Very Small Town To Global superstar” One reason why meniffeE flourished during this time was its location within easy commuting distance of Los Angeles which made it one of the most important cities for industry and commerce outside Of Central California during this era In 1942 riots erupted across southern California following World War II due to concerns about food shortages caused by bombing raids over North America After years of planning by local officials including Mayor Clarence Hirschfeld whose efforts culminated with passage by state Legislature on November 3rd 1941 of Assembly Bill 6010 entitled "An act providing for economic development purposes within certain boundaries surrounding Bakersfield" which created what is now known as Energy Resources District #1 consisting exclusively of properties contiguous oradjacent to City limits bounded generally northwardly by Interstate 5 extending eastwardly unto Cloverdale Road southwardly unto Hansen Boulevard westwardly thence northerly along Cloverdale Road easterly unto Rancho Niguel State Forest beyond said Rancho Niguel State Forest

In the 1930s, during World War II, Menifee was home to more than 1,200 American soldiers stationed in nearby El Centro. Today, Menifee is a small town with a population of about 350 people that includes many businesses and homes dating back to the 1800s.
