The Menifee Naval Air Station was established in 1942 as an auxiliary airfield for the United States Navy. The station served as a training and bombardment ground for fighter pilots during World War II, and later became an active naval aviation center. The Naval Air Station Menifee has since been closed, but the memory of its naval aviation roots remains in the town.
Menifee is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 27,975 at the 2010 census. Menifee is located on the eastern edge of Kern County and is bordered by Bakersfield to the east and south, Nevada City to the west and north, and Salinas to the northwest. The name Menifee comes from Mission San Gabriel Arcangelico in honor of Saint George and St. Mary Magdalene (the patron saints of Menifee). The mission was built in 1836 on land donated by Manuel Garza. In 1847, Father José Altieri founded a Catholic school in Menifee which served as the parish church until 1923 when it became part of Cathedral de Nuestra Senora del Rosario for men only. In 1926 Menifee was annexed by Bakersfield. There were several attempts over time to move the city center from its original location near downtown Bakersfield but all failed due to lack of interest or money from either side involved. Finally on March 9th, 1984 Menifee voters passed an ordinance that made it an incorporated city with its own government including budgeting and elections within six months after passage date On July 1st 2009 Menifee annexed Umpqua Valley creating one municipality with a total population of over 50,000 people

The navy has a long and varied history, dating back to the beginning of civilization. The Menifee Valley is located in the south-central portion of California, approximately 30 miles southwest of Los Angeles and 25 miles east of Pasadena. The valley was named for the meniaceae (a type of palm) that grow there. The first Europeans to visit the area were members of the Spanish expedition led by Gaspar de Portolà in 1769. They found numerous springs and other water features, but did not explore further because they felt secure with their small force at Mission San Gabriel Arcángel. In 1823, a group led by Capt. John Cranch explored and mapped this area. He named the valley Menifee after Mount Menifee, which he saw from his ship while sailing along the coast of California. In 1847, adobe settlements began to spring up around springs in what is now downtown Menifee. By 1860, there were more than 20 adobe buildings in town center alone; by 1870, there were over 100! Many people here came from Southern California as ranch hands or miners during this time period. In 1902, Menifee became an incorporated city under State law following passage of Proposition 8 (the yes on 8 campaign), which limited voting rights to citizens who could demonstrate full legal documentation such as a driver’s license or registration card! At this time it had a population of only about 100 people! During World War II, many businesses closed due to Army recruiting efforts; however, some men continued working at their businesses even when hostilities ceased. After the war ended in 1945, most people left town for various reasons including growing farmland elsewhere in central California or moving away from difficult living conditions during Reconstruction times following Reconstruction agencies such as Public Works Administration (PWA) built roads and other infrastructure throughout much of southern California resulting in inflated prices for agricultural land leading to mass migration into cities throughout those years generally paralleling social changes taking place across America during that era including African American migration into major cities during that time period also known as Black Migration which increased poverty rates among black Americans struggling against very tough economic conditions caused largely by discriminatory practices practiced both within white society towards black Americans and outside white society specifically targeting African American families who often relied heavily on government assistance through food stamps programs offered primarily through local agencies like PWA) many residents returned homeostatically while others moved out permanently due to increasingly expensive housing values relative to income levels and difficult access particularly given prevailing global oil prices at that time furthermore much crime occurred especially given increasing competition for jobs among educated young adults seeking quality education Opportunities appeared mostly locked out for less qualified individuals making little progress despite concerted effort by community organizations like YMCA/YWCA with support from elected officials
