Menifee, California (population: 7,824) is located in Kern County, California. Menifee is a census-designated place (CDP) and the county seat of Kern County. The population was 8,158 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Chico–Fremont Combined Statistical Area. The area now called Menifee was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s. The first post office in Menifee was established on March 15, 1876. In 1908, American businessman Harry Heisler donated land to establish Menifee Airport. Today's airport has a runway that can accommodate all types of aircraft and is used for both general aviation and commercial flights. In 1915, agriculturalist C H Waddell started growing grapes in what would become Menifee wine country. By 1928, his company had produced over 1 million gallons of wine from 9 acres (3 ha). While some wines are still made today by C H Waddell descendants such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blancs, most production has been moved to larger wineries such as Robert Mondavi and Howell Arboretum vineyards since then. Menifee experiences hot summers with temperatures reaching 100 degrees F (38 degrees C), while winters are mild with lows around 50 degrees F (10 degrees C). Annual precipitation averages about 12 inches (30 cm). Menifee was founded in 1878 by J.D. Menifee and his brother George. The brothers were inspired to start a grocery store after noticing that goods available at the local stores were not of high quality or affordable prices. In addition, they wanted to do something that would help improve the community and make it more fun for residents. The first Menifee Grocery Store opened its doors in 1878 on the corner of Third Street and Florence Avenue. It was a small business with only twelve customers at the time, but it quickly became popular because of its low prices and great selection of groceries. On the east side of Menifee, California is a small farming community that began in 1859. The name Menifee comes from the wordmeni-face which means "a rise on the bank of a stream." The first settler in Menifee was Captain James Irvine who arrived with his family in 1859. By 1865, there were 9 families living in Menifee. In 1870, John Capps and his brother Elisha laid out a town lot on land that now makes up part of downtown Menifee. The first store was built on Main Street and it was called the Jansen Store. In 1872, John Capps married Anna Boice and they started their own grocery business at 7th and Folsom Streets. By 1900, there were 23 businesses in Menifee with a population of 350 people. In 1916, Rear Admiral Harry Waddell founded Marines Memorial Hospital as an auxiliary to Marine Base San Diego Commandery which he had been commanding since 1915 when he became Chief of Naval Operations (CNO). Rear Admiral Waddell donated approximately $1 million to build Marine Memorial Hospital which opened its doors on July 1st 1922. It served as a naval hospital for patients injured during World War I, World War II and the Korean War until 1978 when it became an national military medical center known as Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) - also known as Regency Campus - located adjacent to Qualcomm Stadium across from Navy Pier. In 1951, men's basketball led by Don Nelson won their third straight state championship at home against El Dorado Hills High School 66-54 after leading 49-35 at halftime following a 73 point performance from freshman forward Bob Pettit who averaged 20 points per game for Regency University & Santa Clara College.. . . On November 26th 1957 Regency University senior forward Don Nelson scoring 27 points including 10 rebounds including 5 assists gave El Dorado Hills High School their only loss ever to Regency University!
