Air force gift history in Menlo Park, California began when the United States Air Force set up a base at Menlo Park in 1945. The AF unit stationed here was the 5th Bombardment Wing. After World War II, the AF flew bombers and reconnaissance planes to support US troops in Korea and Vietnam. In 1969, the wing's 1st Bombardment Squadron moved from Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio to Menlo Park after being reactivated there as an inactive unit on 4 July 1917. In 1951, USAF activated 2nd Bomber Wing at Menlo Park with Boeing B-29 Superfortresses and began operations of these strategic bombers over North America and Europe. In 1957, 3rd Bombardment Wing arrived at Menlo Park as a subordinate unit of 6th Bombardment Wing which had been activated at Homestead AFB, Florida two years earlier. From 1957 through 1966, 3rd Wing operated Douglas DC-9 aircraft for aerial refueling missions over Saudi Arabia and other parts of the Middle East during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. These flights were part of the USAF effort called "Operation Red Flag." The last major USAF airfield change occurred when Donahue AFB was closed and turned into an airstrip for civilian use by converting it into Edwards AFB on 5 October 1987 following dissolution of the USAF jet services organization. As part of this closure process (and effective 1 October 1987), all remaining AF units were transferred to variants or successor organizations within Air Combat Command (ACC). Withdrawal from custody of DoD ended active duty flying by members of both military service on 20 September 1991; however many former AF personnel continued to work as civil airline pilots until their retirement in 2002[1]. TheAF's presence at Menlo Park has been significant throughout its history: starting with one squadron established here in 1945; continuing through bomber Wings activation & withdrawal throughout 1951-1966; then growth with 1st & 3rd wings arriving during 1967-1987; culminating with DONAHUE AFB closing & conversion into an airstrip for civiliansouse ending active duty flying by members of both military service on 5 October 1987[2]. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9396 which provided for the donation of war supplies to the Spanish military. This order also authorized the creation of the American Museum of Natural history as a research center devoted to science and technology related to war. During World War II, Menlo Park played a critical role as a munitions plant due to its location on San Francisco Bay. In 1957, Menlo Park became one of the first communities in California to adopt an open-air shopping mall when The Regency Center opened adjacent to the campus of UC Berkeley. In 1969, Apple Inc.'s headquarters moved from Jobs' home at 1290 El Camino Real into new buildings on University Avenue near Santa Cruz Boulevard.
