The Menlo Park Army stationed in the area from 1916-1918. The first troops arrived on Christmas Eve, 1916, and were quartered at Fort Point Park. In 1917, the 1st Cavalry Regiment was activated and moved to Menlo Park. The regiment served until 1918 when it returned home to San Francisco. During World War I, the United States government financed the creation of over 100 companies of volunteer soldiers who would fight in Europe as part of World War I. These men were known as "The Western Front Soldiers." In 1915, a company of these soldiers was mobilized for service in California. The unit was known as Company C (1st Battalion) California National Guard Infantry and became part of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team at Camp Roberts. While deployed to France in 1916, they were redesignated Company A (2nd Battalion). Company A remained deployed during World War I and 1919; however their deployment ended on November 3rd 1919 due to expiration of enlistment terms. After World War I ended, all previous enlisted men were discharged or resigned from military service with no chance for re-enlistment because there was no peacetime army in existence at that time.
